Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is a Modern Action RPG Classic - Is it the Best Ys Game?

Welcome to my review of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana! This game was originally developed and published by Nihon Falcom and released on the PlayStation Vita in 2016. It was released in North America the following year in 2017 on both the PlayStation Vita and PS4. In 2018, it was released on the PC and Nintendo Switch and then in 2022, it was released on the PS5. I played the PS5 version. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is arguably the most well known Ys game, which excels in not only the excellent fast paced combat that the Ys series is known for, but also crafts a story that reminded me a lot of the Trails series. It should come as no surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed this game and will say that is my favorite 3D Ys game (I still need to play IX and X and Origin still holds the top spot as my favorite Ys game). Once again, this game takes so many elements from the previous Ys games, especially the 3D ones and improves upon them. I strongly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys action rpgs, but will always recommend that newcomers start with the very first Ys game and work their way through the series in release order like I did.
