Composed in 1791 amidst personal struggles, Mozart’s Requiem is shrouded in mystery. Plagued by illness and financial hardship, Mozart composed much of the Introïtus and Kyrie but could not complete the rest, which was later finished by his student Franz-Xavier Süssmayr. Some believe Mozart’s commissioner, Earl von Walsegg, sought to pass off the composition as his own tribute to his late wife, adding yet another layer to this legendary piece.
