Jeanette Sloan is a British hand-knit designer, writer, tutor and maker who has worked with fibre for over 30 years. Her joyful colour aesthetic, love of embellishment and eye for unusual detail reflect her personal style and provide her with constant inspiration. From bold intarsia and intricate lace to dense crochet-like structures, hand embroidery and beaded colour work; Jeanette’s accessory and garment designs embrace it all.

Jeanette has always enjoyed teaching as it allows her to pass on the knowledge and skills she has accumulated over the years. She’s taught workshops at fibre festivals such as Vogue Knitting Live, Unravel, the Scottish Yarn Festival and Shetland Wool Week as well as more exclusive retreats like West Dean College, The Knitting Hotel and A Nest of Gentle Makers.

In 2018, Jeanette became involved in discussions about the lack of diversity and representation of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour in the fibre industry. She later founded BIPOC in Fiber, a global interactive directory of BIPOC-owned fibre businesses. Since it’s launch, the directory has helped improve the representation of BIPOC in the fibre industry and it’s become an invaluable resource to those looking to be more inclusive in their crafting whilst celebrating BIPOC fibre talent. Jeanette has written several articles on the lack of BIPOC representation in her industry and was an inaugural member of the Vogue Knitting Diversity Advisory Council.

In addition to self publishing designs on Ravelry and Payhip, Jeanette has written several books of hand knitting designs including Modern Daily Knitting’s Field Guide no 15: Open and co-edited Warm Hands, a collection of glove, mitten and mitt designs with Scotland based designer, Kate Davis. In 2019 Jeanette began writing a regular column for Finnish magazine Laine and her patterns have been published in Laine’s magazines and two of their ’52 Weeks’ series of books. Most recently she has collaborated with UK craft retailer Hobbycraft on a capsule collection of knitting patterns due to launch this Autumn when she will also debut as a mentor in series 3 of Make It At Market, made by Flabbergast TV for BBC Television.
.
In 2023, Jeanette was awarded a British Empire Medal in the first King Charles III Birthday Honours List for services to Knitwear Design and diversity in the Fibre Arts.
