"Let's put a happy little demon of desire right here and a splash of a fallen priest that's chained to it being cast in to a happy little hell right here. Don't be the last in line for this happy little painting." It's as hard to sing heavenly happy songs in a minor key as it is to paint hell with Bob Ross' palette.

I always think of this album cover when I recall the line (was it Chesterton?): "the halls of hell are lined with priests, nuns, and popes." The devil never tempts more successfully than on the steps of the church. And Uncle Screwtape tells us that Our Father Below prizes no soul more than a truly great man of the cloth who abandoned Father in heaven for some other apple on earth.

Follow the link below to the interview with Dio in which explains that the meaning of Holy Diver is a parallel world in which a Christ/Socrates/Remus/Abel figure/an innocent soul taking on the scapegoat role. I wonder if he had read Girard and Oughourlian and intended the mimetic mechanism of scapegoating to relieve the rivalrous desire which had escalated to the violent extremes, or was Dio just perspicaciously close to the great mimeticists who had published Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World only five years prior to Holy DIver's release. He also discusses his Catholic upbringing and why he takes aim at the church as well as the satanists in heavy metal.

As a guy who went to a lot of heavy metal concerts in my youth, I look back and see what made those fanboys different from other genres. “Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.” -Colossians 3:21 I've been to many concerts at which a mosh pit broke out (and in Detroit, that's nothing to mess with) and could see that the boys in the middle of those pits were at the margins of society, and at the edge of explosive violence. They were venting a frustration/the sting from a wound put there by their father. Daddy issues also are found in every daughter on the pole. -There but for the Grace of God go I.

I've had this backing track for years and would give it a shot once a year or so. My eyes have grown so bad that I can't hardly read the old lyrics sheet in the small font. This morning I put together a backing vid with that Bob Ross pic and that awful music video and gave it a go.
