Chandra Public Lecture at IUCAA, Pune
delivered by Dr. Nigar Shaji, Associate Director (Projects), URSC, ISRO

The Indian Space Research Organization's (ISRO) missions cater to myriad purposes. On the one hand, there are programmes that are critical for a wide range of civilian needs such as communication, remote sensing, navigation, resource mapping, weather studies, education, etc. Then there are scientific missions that are undertaken to tackle important scientific inquiries that probe the hidden mysteries of the Universe.

Worldwide, the space sector is opening up for more and more private participation. In India, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe) has been established as a single window agency to facilitate the participation of private players. which enabled a phenomenal increase in industrial ventures in the space sector.

To catalyze vigorous growth and establish a sustainable ecosystem, ISRO has put in place a number of technologies as well as human resource capacity-building programmes which will offer unprecedented opportunities for youngsters to be a part of this moment in the history of exploration of the final frontier.
